Masks and respirators will become mandatory: Germany introduces new rules

The German authorities have officially announced that the country will introduce new nationwide measures to protect against coronavirus for the coming autumn and winter. The new decree, voted by the Bundestag, will come into force on October 1 and will be valid until April 7, 2023.

Long-distance trains

The adopted package of requirements is aimed at curbing the spread of coronavirus infection. In accordance with the new rules, tourists aged 14 years and over must wear FFP2 respirators from October 1 on long-distance trains. Children aged 6 to 13 must also wear a regular medical face mask.

Airports and airplanes

While wearing a mask will be mandatory on long-distance trains, the requirements will be different on airplanes and airports. Passengers are not required to wear a face shield on domestic and international flights. However, it was pointed out that this rule may change if the number of cases of COVID-19 infection starts to increase.

Other public spaces

From 1 October Coronavirus-related rules will also be tightened in hospitals and nursing homes. Protective masks and respirators will be enforced nationwide, and provinces may apply additional rules on a case-by-case basis depending on the local coronavirus situation.

Who may not wear a mask?

< p> Individual regions will be able to introduce requirements for wearing masks in public transport and other public places and in schools. An exception to wearing a protective mask and respirator will be tourists and local residents who can provide the inspection authorities with a recent negative test for coronavirus, a certificate of a recent infection or a vaccination certificate with a note that they received a covid vaccine in the last three months.
