According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Tourism of the Maldives, Russia remains among the leading suppliers of tourists to the paradise islands, although it has already dropped to third place, losing the championship in terms of tourist flow to Indian tourists and the British. The Maldives received a total of 777,352 tourists, of which Russians account for almost 10%.
Between January 1 and June 20, the rate of tourist arrivals as a whole increased by 58.1% compared to the same period in 2021, the ministry reported. This is still below pre-Covid indicators – by 5.7%. In May, the Maldives received 125,522 tourists. 75,030 arrivals have already been registered in June, a 101.1% increase compared to arrivals recorded in 2021, and almost pre-pandemic figures – just 0.7% below 2019. An average of 4,500 people visit the Maldives per day.
“Although Russia has maintained its position as the main market for tourism in the Maldives, which it was in the past, it has moved to third place. India was once again the top tourist market for the Maldives, accounting for 14.7% of total arrivals by June 20. In second place is the United Kingdom, which accounts for 12.1%. The third place is occupied by Russia, which accounts for 9.9 percent,” the ministry reported. The top five also includes Germany with 8.4% and Italy with 6.2%.
By the way, this year the Maldives celebrates 50 years since the creation of the tourism industry in 1972. By this anniversary, they want to get a significant increase in tourists – as President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said back in winter, the Maldives aims to receive 1.6 million tourists this year.
