Russia breaks off diplomatic relations with popular beach country: closing embassies will put an end to tourism

A diplomatic scandal between Russia and Bulgaria could put an end to tourism in this beach country. The Russian embassy in Sofia calls on the Russian leadership to close the Russian diplomatic mission in Sofia. The reason is the order of the outgoing Bulgarian Prime Minister to expel 70 Russian diplomats and embassy staff.

In general, this season, Bulgaria has practically been left without Russian tourists due to the policy of closed skies and the consistent Russophobia of the government – which, by the way, was recently given a vote of no confidence in parliament, but its farewell greetings risk bringing down tourism completely. It will be especially difficult for property owners in Bulgaria, a significant part of whom are Russians, experts add.

The situation developed as follows: the government of Kiril Petkov, a Bulgarian with Canadian citizenship, who had resigned, but continued to act temporarily, ordered the expulsion of 70 Russian diplomats and embassy staff from the country. Russian Ambassador to Bulgaria Eleonora Mitrofanova sent a corresponding note to the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry stating that such a step was unacceptable and stating an ultimatum to cancel this decision by Friday 12 noon. The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry rejected this note on Friday.

As a result, the ambassador appealed to the Russian government. “I immediately intend to raise the issue with the leadership of my country about the closure of the Russian embassy in Bulgaria, which will inevitably lead to the closure of the Bulgarian diplomatic mission in Moscow. Responsibility for the further grave consequences of this step lies with the government of Kiril Petkov,” the ambassador emphasized.

Let us recall that Bulgaria, despite many years of efforts, was not admitted to the Schengen zone. The country still has its own tourist visa, and in “peacetime” Russian tourists were offered fairly easy conditions for obtaining it. However, at the moment, the diplomatic scandal will clearly turn into problems. According to experts, property owners and other Russians who “departed” to Bulgaria will suffer first of all – the already small opportunity to get there will become even more difficult.
