“Georgia still has a special law for those who have been to Abkhazia and South Ossetia. From the point of view of Georgian jurisprudence, visiting these territories is illegal. But in recent years, very, very many Russians have been there,” he said.
“At first, the sanctions of the criminal code provided for up to 4 years in prison (well, or simply deportation, if you’re lucky). Later they were mitigated – a fine of 400 lari (about 12 thousand rubles at the current exchange rate) and expulsion. There is also a statute of limitations in the new edition – after 6 years after the trip, you are no longer in danger,” the author of the blog assured.
However, in reality, the situation for tourists does not look so gloomy: the Georgian authorities do not apply these norms totally. The main thing is not to try to enter the country from Abkhazia and North Ossetia and not to spread information about trips in these directions while in Georgia, since the latter considers the two regions to be part of its state.
