“Negotiated” teenagers under the age of 10 will be banned from entering the Giza Pyramids museum complex – at least on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays. Such an official statement was made by the Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mostafa al-Waziri. We are talking primarily about local teenagers – young tourists arriving accompanied by parents and other persons and with all the documents the restrictions will not be affected. Local experts considered this measure a consequence of the scandal with tourists who were sexually harassed by 13 teenagers in the area of the pyramids of Giza a few weeks ago.
Recall that 13 suspects were detained on state charges, including three adults, and the rest – teenagers from 13 to 15 years old. They were detained on charges of sexual harassment of two tourists in the area of the pyramids of Giza. The reason was a video clip that spread on social networks. The clip, which is no longer than 35 seconds, shows a group of young men chasing and touching female tourists at the pyramids of Giza on the third day of Eid al-Fitr.
The Egyptian public was outraged. The prosecutor's office demanded a police investigation into the incident and on Sunday received a report identifying the thirteen perpetrators.
According to the investigation, the person who filmed the video clip was a tour guide who accompanied the harassed tourists. According to him, he documented what happened in order to draw attention to these incidents, and assured that by this action he did not try to damage the economy or tourism.
The guide also told the essence of the scandal: the tour company instructed him to accompany two girls on a tour in the area of the pyramids. During the tour, a group of boys asked to be photographed with them, after which they began to verbally and physically harass the tourists. As a result, some of the defendants admitted their guilt. And teenagers without the permission of their parents will not be allowed to approach the Great Pyramids – at least on weekends and holidays.
