Another country may be added to the Schengen area in 2023: the European Parliament approved the accession of Croatia to Schengen visa-free zone – this proposal was accepted by 534 deputies, 53 deputies voted against. The Parliament urged the European Council to continue the process and make a final decision on the abolition of border controls.
Recall that earlier the European Parliament adopted a resolution urging the EU to allow Bulgaria and Romania to enter the Schengen area. It is expected that acceptance into this visa block will occur before the end of 2022. In their case, 547 MEPs voted in favor of including Bulgaria and Romania in the Schengen circulation system, with 49 MEPs voting against and 43 abstaining. Among those who objected were, for example, deputies from the Netherlands.
The final decision on this issue must be taken unanimously by the Council of the EU. This will theoretically happen at the end of 2022. Read more at this link.
