Spanish towns have begun to refuse any steps that can make them popular and attract the attention of annoying tourists. The first precedent was the village of Siurana, located in Spain – the locals unanimously refused to participate in the campaign “The most beautiful villages in Spain”, surprising its organizers very much, just not to get such a title, which would automatically bring a bunch of tourists to this village. The reason is that the attention of annoying tourists is extremely undesirable by the locals, in fact, tourists in many places in Spain have become afraid of the devil…
The village in question is located in Tarragona, 85 miles south of Barcelona and close to Spain's Priorat wine region. There are only 30 inhabitants in the village.
As the mayor of Cornudella de Montsant, who also takes care of the village, told local media: “Quality tourism is now impossible, and we cannot and do not want to cope with crowds of onlookers.” The mayor also complained that the region already has problems with overtourism, and that the tiny village has neither infrastructure nor anything designed for tourists.
At the same time, the campaign organizers did not approve of such a decision and deny the problem of hordes of tourists. Francisco Maestre, president of the association, told the Spanish newspaper El Pais: “The appearance on the list of the most beautiful villages entails a significant increase in tourism, but this tourism is seasonally adjusted. “This is not about harming the village. We have never had such a clear refusal,” he said, adding that there are 105 villages on the list, and only one of the four applicants is accepted into the campaign.
Recall that the plan to “evict” tourists is being undertaken larger Spanish resorts. So, Mallorca, in the fight against “overtourism”, seeks to limit the number of places in hotels for tourists, plans to introduce a quota – no more than 430,000 tourist places throughout the island.
