Tourists on the beach were horrified when they stumbled upon a boot with a leg sticking out of it

Tourists were horrified, stumbled upon a shoe with a leg sticking out of it: vacationers on Petone Beach in New Zealand accidentally discovered a shoe washed up on the shore with a cut off human leg inside. The gruesome find has worried locals who are now wary of stumbling across their favorite vacation spot and other similar “items of clothing.”

Wellington Region Police have confirmed that other body remains are being searched at the site of the boot's discovery, but information on the identity the deceased and other details of the investigation are in no hurry to share. According to detective Steve Williamson, the criminal case on the fact of the incident has not yet been opened.

Meanwhile, local residents are excited by the horrific find. “We come here with our kids and no one knows if we'll run into a second leg,” says one beach visitor.

However, such finds are not uncommon for beaches in this and other areas. Since 2007, more than 20 feet have been washed up on the US coast alone, shod in boots, sneakers and other footwear.

Less dramatic stories are also known. Last year, The Daily Star reported on a gruesome find on the beach: the body of a dead woman washed ashore. However, it soon turned out that it was only an incredibly realistic silicone sex doll, thrown into the ocean by someone.
